Thanos’ villainy was established in his fight with Hulk.

Marvel had always built up Thanos as the Avengers’ most formidable adversary yet, but in order to sell the audience on his villainy, they had to come up with a scene that would leave no doubt in our minds that he was indeed the real deal. And that’s exactly what the first scene of Avengers: Infinity War accomplished - not only did Thanos take the first of many lives he would claim through the course of the film, he also took on (and eviscerated) the Hulk.

Now, in a new behind-the-scenes video shared by a channel called It’s Amazing, we can see just how the directors, Joe & Anthony Russo, teamed up with visual effects artists and created an action scene involving two entirely CG characters. We see a combination of pre-visualisation footage - basically digitally rendered scenes - and Josh Brolin gives a committed performance as Thanos, wearing a motion capture suit.

It took 13 visual effects companies, including industry mainstays such as Industrial Light & Magic, Digital Domain and Weta Digital, to create the film’s over 2680 VFX shots. Digital Domain was the company that handled the 400 plus shots required to render Brolin’s performance into an entirely CG character. “We took the helmet-cam data, which is quite low-resolution, to create a facial motion mesh. Then you feed that through a machine-learning algorithm, which finds the appropriate fit with the high-resolution shape,” Kelly Port, visual effects supervisor at Digital Domain told CNET.

Brolin recently said that he took on the role after he watched co-star Benedict Cumberbatch play the dragon Smaug through motion capture in the Hobbit films.

Brolin followed up Infinity War with a supporting role in Deadpool 2. He will next be seen in the upcoming crime drama, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. The Avengers saga will conclude with 2019’s Avengers 4.
